The Yardbirds version is embarrassingly feeble in comparison, but if most people have even heard the song at all that is the version they are most likely to have come across. I suspect few people, even those who professionally commentate on music , have ever heard of Billy Boy, but by golly, we'll never cease to be reminded of the importance of the Yardbirds spawning the triumvirate of rock guitar gods.

You're right, most blues LP's produced for the white " folk" and later on the "rock" audience are garbage in comparison to the great 78's and 45's of the past. As the 60's progressed the LP, with the full support of the record companies who made more money from them, was anointed with a much greater level of artistry and gained an almost mystical status especially among young self conscious record buyers whereas 45's were increasingly deemed to be facile and of interest mainly to teenyboppers and the musically unsophisticated. The result was a huge number of albums produced that are mostly full of inconsequential and indistinctive material. The craft of focusing on a really hot performance of 3 minutes or so that people might actually like to buy simply because it thrilled them was more and more disparaged as mere commercial pandering and LPs attained an iconic status which continues until to today. Even though some may be awarded Grammys and other meaningless accolades most are musically pretty mundane and unmemorable at best. For example due to his rock star affiliation Buddy Guy's profile has never been higher, but the trouble is he hasn't made a great record in almost 50 years. The same with Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley before he died. How many distinctive songs can most people actually recall from the thousands of generally dreadful "blues" CDs produced annually?professor loconoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3226924615283203864.post-76600930828036414162010-12-08T18:55:45.430-05:002010-12-08T18:55:45.430-05:00"There's three old columns as pdf's h..."There's three old columns as pdf's here"

Jim, read em. Both times were actually Blasters (Phil, Johnny and Bill) shows at FitzGerald's and they brought him up in the middle of their set and played Billy Boy tunes. First time, it was The Blasters with Keith Wyatt; second time was on July 3rd this year and Dave Alvin was there too...do I need to say how cool it was? No, probably not, haha. Also, the first time was the same weekend I got to meet & hang with Miriam and Mr. Rhythm himself at the Sweets release party. I tried to get the Blasters to come on over to the bar the next night but they decided they didn't want to go back and forth between Berwyn and Wicker Park the night of a show. What a great weekend that was. Billy Boy looks and sounds great still -- the man doesn't look anywhere near his real age.Benjaminhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04013248532960596091noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3226924615283203864.post-62620353500719808242010-12-07T20:59:52.173-05:002010-12-07T20:59:52.173-05:00I always liked this clip

"

Bloging is certianly a different type of writing since you can add music, video, etc., it saves you the trouble of trying to describe sounds without, eventually you run out of words and start repeating yourself. I often think of trying to put together a book of things I've previously written over the years but honestly, the idea of trying to find an agent to sell it or an editor to buy it just gives me more excuses to put it off. Maybe in the future, e-books will become more like blogs w/hyper links to music, photos, video, etc., that would be a fun way to do a book.
