Tried to watch Public Enemies, too, and that was as bad. What is it about these kinda flicks? They're "All mouth and no trousers", as the old saying goes...

Glad to read that Higgins had no idea about how he created his style, some stones are best left unturned.

Great to see Richard Jordan and Peter Boyle getting props. Jordan's pretty solid alongside Mitchum in The Yakuza, too. And how the fuck did Boyle end up in laughtrack-soaked dreck like Everybody Loves Raymond? Mind you, I'spose it's no stranger than Peter Cook ending up playing a butler on US TV...

JossAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3226924615283203864.post-64089113387976420892010-08-05T19:47:37.600-04:002010-08-05T19:47:37.600-04:00"Nicholson looked like he was enjoying himsel..."Nicholson looked like he was enjoying himself but about a third of the way into The Departed I realized I neither knew nor cared if Damon or Dicaprio was the bad guy. Mitchum as Eddie Coyle is fantastic, his character is a mid level player who knows he is in deep stuff. The self awareness of Eddie Coyle is what hooks you in the movie, the crimes are almost secondary to watching Mitchum live in Coyle's skin.

Nicholson looked like he was enjoying himself but about a third of the way into The Departed I realized I neither knew nor cared if Damon or Dicaprio was the bad guy. Apparently his father was a politician, and hung out in City Hall. One day, he took 8-year-old George to work with him, to show him what he did. So they're going up the stairs and here comes Mayor Curley, that definitive Boston pol. "Higgins!" he says, shaking George's dad's hand. "And what have we here, your son?" And his dad introduced the kid to the mayor, the mayor said something nice about his dad, and that was that.

Years -- *years* later, Higgins has some business over at City Hall, and who should he spy but now former Mayor Curley, who walks right up to him and says "George Higgins, as I live and breathe! What a shame about your dad," who had died some time ago. First time he'd seen Curley since he was 8. That, Higgins opined, is a true politician.

Dunno where I read it, but it's sure stuck with me.Ed Wardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12846657618234700638noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3226924615283203864.post-85278496385884536932010-08-05T06:59:37.042-04:002010-08-05T06:59:37.042-04:00The Eddie Coyle movie has been on the premium cabl...The Eddie Coyle movie has been on the premium cable channels lately.
